Accurate structural steel takeoffs and cost estimates for W-shapes, HSS, beams, columns, decks, joists, and miscellaneous metals for steel fabricators and GCs across all 50 US states.
Structural steel estimating services help steel fabricators, steel erectors, general contractors, structural engineers, and developers accurately calculate steel quantities, fabrication costs, labor costs, connection hardware, and installation expenses before construction begins. Our experienced structural steel estimators prepare detailed structural steel quantity takeoffs, material takeoffs, and complete structural steel cost estimates for residential, commercial, industrial, infrastructure, and high-rise projects across the United States. We estimate every major CSI Division 05 scope, including wide flange beams, columns, HSS sections, steel joists, steel decking, trusses, base plates, connection plates, anchor bolts, stairs, handrails, miscellaneous metals, and structural steel framing. Using Tekla, PlanSwift, Bluebeam, and current market pricing, every estimate includes accurate steel quantities, weight calculations, fabrication costs, labor pricing, and detailed cost breakdowns to help contractors reduce estimating errors, submit competitive bids, control project costs, and complete steel projects with confidence.
These are the four structural steel estimating problems that cost fabricators and GCs the most on every project.
Structural steel is priced by the ton. A missed member, wrong section size, or incorrect length compounds across hundreds of pieces into a significant cost error.
Bolted and welded connections can represent 15 to 25% of total steel fabrication cost. Missing connection plates, bolts, and welds destroys steel bid margin.
Steel erection, "cranes, ironworkers, bolting-up, alignment", is a major and separate cost from fabrication. Bundling them without detail creates serious bid risk.
Using A36 pricing where A992 is specified, or missing HSS wall thickness, produces inaccurate bids that win unprofitable jobs or lose competitive ones.
DFE Estimating solves all four — precise tonnage-based structural steel takeoffs with connection, erection, and ASTM grade coverage, delivered before your bid deadline.
A four-step process that calculates every ton, every connection, and every erection cost in your steel scope.
Upload your structural engineering drawings, steel framing plans, and connection details through our secure portal. PDF, CAD, Revit, and Tekla files accepted.
Your assigned steel estimator identifies every AISC section by designation (W12x26, HSS6x4x1/4, etc.), confirms ASTM grade, and flags any missing connection details or conflicting specifications.
We calculate the weight of every structural member by length and unit weight, add all connection plates and hardware, quantity all bolts and welds, and build a complete steel bill of materials.
You receive a complete Excel steel estimate, members by AISC designation and tonnage, connections by type, erection costs by crew, ready for fabricator pricing and bid submission.

Structural steel estimating is the process of calculating the weight, material cost, fabrication cost, and erection cost of all structural steel members and connections in a construction project. It begins with a tonnage takeoff — measuring every beam, column, HSS tube, plate, and connection from structural drawings and calculating its weight using AISC section weight tables. Material costs are then applied by ASTM grade and current mill pricing, fabrication costs are added per ton, and erection costs are calculated separately by crew size and crane requirements. DFE delivers complete structural steel estimates covering all Division 05 elements.
Structural steel costs in the United States vary by processing stage, section type, and location. Raw wide-flange steel from a mill typically ranges from $800 to $1,400 per ton depending on market conditions. Fabricated and primer-painted structural steel delivered to site ranges from $1,500 to $2,000 per ton for standard commercial sections. Fully erected and bolted-up structural steel for standard commercial buildings ranges from $2,000 to $2,500 per ton including all labour and crane costs. Miscellaneous metals — handrails, stairs, gratings — typically cost $3,000 to $5,000 per ton installed due to higher fabrication labour intensity. DFE uses current mill index pricing for all structural steel estimates.
Division 05 is the CSI (Construction Specifications Institute) division covering all metals work in a construction project. It includes structural metal framing — beams, columns, and bracing (Division 05 12 00), metal joists (Division 05 21 00), metal decking (Division 05 31 00), cold-formed metal framing (Division 05 40 00), metal fabrications including stairs, railings, and gratings (Division 05 50 00), and ornamental metals (Division 05 70 00). DFE Estimating covers all Division 05 sub-categories in every structural steel and miscellaneous metals estimate, delivering fully CSI-compliant takeoffs.
ASTM A36 and A992 are the two most common structural steel grades in US construction. A36 is a carbon steel with a minimum yield strength of 36,000 psi — the standard grade for steel plates, angles, channels, and miscellaneous fabrications where high strength is not critical. A992 is a high-strength low-alloy steel with a minimum yield strength of 50,000 psi — the current standard for wide-flange W-shape beams and columns in structural applications. A992 costs slightly more per ton than A36 but allows more slender, lighter sections for equivalent structural performance. DFE identifies and prices each structural steel element by its correct ASTM grade in every estimate.
The American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) classifies structural steel sections into standardised shape categories. W-shapes (wide flange) are the most common — used for beams and columns in commercial and industrial buildings. S-shapes (American Standard beams) are similar to W-shapes but with narrower, more sloped flanges. C-shapes (channels) are used for purlins, girts, and secondary framing. L-shapes (angles) are used for bracing, connections, and lintels. HSS (hollow structural sections) are square, rectangular, or round tubes used for columns, bracing, and exposed architectural elements. MC-shapes (miscellaneous channels) are heavier than standard channels. DFE identifies and prices all AISC section types in every structural steel estimate.
Structural steel estimating service fees typically range from $300 to $2,500 depending on project size, tonnage, and complexity. A small single-storey commercial steel frame estimate generally starts at $300 to $600. Mid-size multi-storey commercial steel frame estimates range from $800 to $1,500. Large-scale or complex structural steel packages for industrial facilities or high-rise structures can exceed $2,500. DFE charges flat fees based on your project scope. Mill steel pricing is the cost of raw structural steel sections direct from the steel mill — typically quoted per ton for standard W-shapes, HSS, angles, and plates. Fabricated steel pricing is the cost of mill steel plus the fabrication labour to cut, drill, weld, assemble, and primer-paint the steel according to your structural engineer’s shop drawings. Fabricated steel typically costs 50 to 100% more per ton than mill steel because fabrication labour is significant. Erection is then priced separately on top of fabricated steel. DFE breaks all three cost categories — mill material, fabrication, and erection — into separate line items in every structural steel estimate.
Miscellaneous metals (Division 05 50 00) covers all the non-structural steel fabrications in a building that are not part of the primary structural frame. This includes steel stairs and stringers, handrails and guardrails, steel ladders, floor gratings and bar grating, steel floor plates, lintels, steel bollards, pipe guards, wall-mounted brackets, and all other fabricated steel accessories. Miscellaneous metals are typically estimated separately from structural steel because they have a much higher fabrication-to-material ratio — often priced at $3,000 to $5,000 per ton installed versus $2,000 to $2,500 per ton for structural steel erection.
